Campus Showcase: Open Mic Night

Welcome back to another installment of MIC Talks Music! I hope everybody enjoyed Tommy's review of 3rd Secret. If you haven't checked that out, give it a look before reading today's post! Today, I have a special post in which I get to talk about the wonderful talents on campus. For those who don't know, the Music Industry Club had their very first Open Mic of the semester last Wednesday. This event gave some great local and student artists an opportunity to showcase their work. For today's blog, we will be looking at each of these performers so you can support your favorites.

Performer Showcase

Reverend Sinn

Connor Balderaz is an experienced artist studying media production. He is a frequent attendee of Open Mic and is often performing originals or covers of hard rock songs under the name Reverend Sinn. He performed an original track called Bloodshot Eyes and a cover of Heaven by Warrant. Outside of performing at our Open Mics, Reverend Sinn has played his fair share of live shows.

Eleni Kazacos

Eleni is a psychology major and also one of the newest additions to the Music Industry Club and we couldn't be happier to have another talented singer among us. She sang her rendition of Dancing On My Own by Calum Scott on stage, but she also has music of her own on various streaming services. Check out her song, "don't change," or look at her Tik Tok for additional singing content.

Mitchell Hurley

That's right, I took the stage last Wednesday as well. While I usually recite some of my poems that I write in my spare time, I thought I'd try stand-up comedy for the first time. I joked about everything from a car crash to Onlyfans to amateur high school soccer. If you'd like to read more of my poetry, I have a few to check out on Instagram as well as more on the way. Anyway, lets get on to the other amazing talents we had last week.

Matt Parker (Eversail)

Another talented new member of MIC. Matt Parker, an economics major, is the lead singer and guitarist of the band, Eversail. While he didn't perform any songs from the band on stage, he did a great cover of Pure Devotion by Turnover. Eversail describes themselves as an "alternative shoegaze group" if you were interested in what kind of music Matt's band makes. You can check the band out on Instagram listed below.

Tommy the Tom

Tommy Marquart is a familiar name around these parts. He is a forensic science major, the vice president of the Music Industry Club, a talented bassist and violinist, and a comedian. He took the stage with a comedic tale that he simply calls "The Fruit Story." This allegedly true story tells the final moments of three men stranded on an island inhabited by cannibals. Tommy didn't provide any links to any work so I suggest stopping by Open Mic and seeing him for yourself.

Amber Gardenia

Amber is another regular attendee of Open Mic, often playing covers of alternative rock and punk. While she majors in psychology at BG, she also has been working on some music of her own, some of which she shared with us on Wednesday. She played two originals called Someday, Somehow and Said, as well as a cover of My Aquarium by Drop Nineteens. While she hasn't released any music yet, follow Amber's Instagram for updates on her upcoming releases.

Alyssa Barbeck

Alyssa Barbeck is new to Open Mic but she surely blew us away with her poetry. Alyssa, who is an integrated language arts education major, recited three poems that she had written, each with a different theme. "Belladonna" was elegant and sensual. "Role Model" describes Alyssa's contempt with a dream-crushing educator, raising questions about the legitimacy of some people's desires to teach. Her final poem, "Rebirth," is an optimistic perspective on the scary concept of death. Check out her poetry on Instagram at the account below.

Rubberbands and Pencils

Samm Lieberman is an Open Mic regular, known for her acoustic originals and covers. She is a graphic design major and a lovely guest to have on stage. She performed two covers, Cleopatra by The Lumineers and Counting The Days by We Are The Dirt, as well as an orignal called Evermore. On stage, she goes by the name "Rubberbands and Pencils," a name that you can search on Soundcloud, Bandcamp, or Instagram to find more of her music.

Missing Socks

Ethan Besselman is an established artist at BGSU with quite the reputation at our Open Mic events. He is another executive member of MIC and he manages the sound for our events. This psychology major is better known as Missing Socks when performing. He performed an unreleased song called Back that you can find on Tik Tok as well as a favorite from his EP, Functions, called turningred_, both on the ukulele. His music can be found on social media or streaming services.

FLICK MARSH

Abhishek Rathi is a grad student majoring in applied statistics with business analytics. Aside from his studies, Abhishek is busy rapping under the name FLICK MARSH. FLICK performed two of songs on stage. The first was a free verse that he performed over the beat to ORVILLE by Logic. He follows this song up with an unreleased original called PEAK OF THE GLOBE. Find any of his music on all streaming platforms.
