3rd Secret: A Grunge Comeback Story? (Album Review with Tommy)

Hello, I’m Tommy, not Mitchell. I’m the vice president and other bearded member of MIC. I’d like to give a brief introduction to an album by a band I found recently. If you’re already familiar with grunge, you’ll love 3rd Secret. If you’re not, they’re definitely worth a listen and would be a good introduction to the genre, because the sound of the music isn’t as heavy as the genre can be known for, but it still has the melancholic feel to it that sets it apart from most popular songs of today.

I found the band while watching Rick Beato on YouTube, a creator that has a great channel that discusses all things music from a rock producer’s point of view: guitar lesson videos, music theory classes, a series called “What Makes This Song Great,” which I highly recommend watching, as well as videos essays that can introduce musicians, where 3rd Secret’s self-titled album was featured. 3rd Secret is a grunge superband comprised of guitarists Kim Thayil from Soundgarden and Jon “Bubba” Dupree from Void, bassist Krist Novoselic from Nirvana, drummer Matt Cameron from Pearl Jam and vocalists Jillian Raye and Jennifer Johnson. I had never heard of Raye and Johnson before this band, but their vocal performances are so beautiful and unique. It is really refreshing to hear female vocalists in the grunge genre which is predominantly male-heavy. I could easily put the vocals in the track "I Choose Me" in the top 10 greatest duets of all time for how well the two sing together, the sound of the harmonies, and how well the melodies and lyrics of the song are written.

Instrumentally, the riffs by Thayil instantly make me think of Soundgarden, which is one of the most influential bands to my taste in music (my Spotify auras are happy and spooky). Each member of the band also brings their own style that creates a huge sound that is extremely enjoyable to listen to if you’re a fan of rock. Other tracks on the album have a similar rock sound to "I Choose Me," and there are some softer acoustic songs as well. "Winter Solstice" features the sounds of chiming bells, acoustic guitar, flute, and some barking dogs that create a dark folk sound.

Favorite Tracks: I Choose Me, Winter Solstice, Lies Fade Away, and Live Without You

Wrap-Up

I don’t think grunge should be the next genre that takes over the charts because it had its reign in the 90s and I’m looking for something completely new, but it is nice to hear different styles of music that have lost popularity make brief comebacks, especially the sadder and heavier ones. I hope you enjoy listening to the album as much as I do.
